Thanks to the Internet, most people pay their bills, seek out entertainment, and get their news on-line. So it is not surprising that music streaming is as popular as it is. Many people stream their music and there are many music-streaming services to choose from. This is very advantageous as people always have access to their music, if they have access to the Internet.

If you are curious as to the differences in these services, we have highlighted a handful below.

Pandora: Pandora is very widely used because of its simple user interface. After navigating to the website, you are able to input a song or artist you want to hear and Pandora will create a “radio” station determined by that information. This is a wonderful way to learn about new artists with similar sounds. The stations that Pandora creates are easily customizable as well. If Pandora chooses an artist that you don’t like, you can select the thumbs down symbol on the song. Pandora allows for further customization by allowing you to “seed” your station with various artists. While you can listen to Pandora without creating an account, it is necessary if you want to save your individualized stations.

Grooveshark: Grooveshark is similar to Pandora. But you can also build your own playlists manually, all without creating an account. However, those that want to save their play lists will have to sign up for a free account. Like Pandora, Grooveshark also offers recommendations for songs that you might like based upon your past musical choices. Grooveshark also has an interesting feature: You can help build the service’s database of music by adding your own favorite songs and artists if you don’t find them in Grooveshark’s existing collection.

Rhapsody: Rhapsody has quickly made a name for itself thanks to its huge database of more than 14 million songs. Users be required to pay for the service – $10 a month – but by doing so, they’ll be able to stream any song from the service’s considerable collection.

Spotify: Spotify was introduced in 2008, and since then it has expanded into one of the most widely known and used music-streaming services. Spotify is very user friendly and, like Grooveshark, users can listen to entire albums or decide to use the radio function. One of the things that people love about Spotify is its integration with Facebook. If you use the Spotify app, it keeps a running list of the songs you have listened to on Facebook. Furthermore, users can see what their Facebook friends are presently listening to on a real-time feed. This is great for those who are in search of new music if one of their friends has similar tastes.

When was the last time we saw a Windows product which captured the essence of “cool”? Before recently it had been some time, but when Microsoft created the Kinect for Windows that all changed. The Kinect is a gesture and voice-sensing device that was initially developed for the Xbox gaming console.

A version of the device also works with Windows-operated PCs, and shortly after its launch in February, people started discovering innovative ways to use it.

Innovative Uses for the Kinect

For instance, at the Chicago Auto Show a few months ago, the chief marketing manager for Nissan North America used Kinect for Windows to generate a virtual tour of the Pathfinder’s upgraded interior. This proved particularly beneficial because the marketing manager only had the Pathfinder’s empty shell to show off at the Auto Show. A large screen powered by Kinect showed visitors exactly what they’d be viewing if they were actually sitting within the finished body of the new Pathfinder. The screen, for example, displayed the car’s dual moon roofs and several other features.

Microsoft is cooperating with companies to create applications for the Kinect. This not only encourages ingenuity but it puts the Kinect at the center of many of the most recent innovations. One example of a company that is working closely with Microsoft in this way is Boeing. Boeing used the Kinect to develop virtual tours of its jets. Another example is a medical facility in Canada. They’re using the Kinect’s gesture-recognition capability to swipe through CT scans. This eradicates the possibility of getting germs on their hands from a keyboard or mouse.

Kinect: A Solid Hit

Microsoft hit a home run when they invented the Kinect. The Xbox 360 was last year’s best-selling video gaming console, and they have the Kinect to thank for that. Since November of 2010 Microsoft has sold more than 18 million Kinect devices.

It may seem hard to believe, but Windows and its creator could have actually found something that’s not only useful, but cool, which can do nothing but good for their reputation.

These days, whenever you post an open position on the Internet, hundreds of people respond. Many of these people are eligible candidates for the position, so you call them in for an interview. But how do you sift through them to find the truly impressive and enthusiastic people? Since the interview is fundamentally all you can go on, your interview questions are important.

It’s crucial that you create a job interview strategy that pin points what you are looking for in an employee. If you ask the same cookie cutter questions that everyone else does, you will get cookie cutter answers.

Ask the Right Questions

Start by asking the right questions. Don’t ask prospects what their job titles were at past positions. Don’t ask them what their duties were. Instead, ask them to list any revolutionary ideas that they created for their previous employers. Ask them if these ideas helped their employers earn more money, perform more effectively, or lower expenses.

Don’t ask candidates about their strengths and weaknesses. A lot of people have memorized stock answers to these questions. Rather, ask them how they bring their unique individuality to their jobs. Ask them what they do to make their jobs more interesting and enjoyable. Truly creative workers are able to tell you of new innovations they developed and new programs they created, all in the effort of adding that creative spark to their positions.

Another simple way to evaluate a prospective employee’s creativity is to ask them to carry out a task. For instance, you could ask them to brainstorm ideas for an ad campaign, or write a short essay about their ideal workplace. Whatever it is, it is something your interviewee will not expect and it will give you a picture of their creativity.

Employers have an edge in today’s job market. They can select from among some of the top job seekers available, but to get the best people, employers have to first change the way they perform their job interviews.

Traveling for business is not fun. We are generally rushed, we don’t eat well, and we have to endure the hassle of airports and long-term parking. It’s not surprising that a great many companies opt toward videoconferencing rather then traveling. As videoconferencing technology advances, many people wonder if business traveling could become a thing of the past.

The End of Business Travel?

But is this really what business people and their employers should want? Maybe not. Videoconferencing may never replace face-to-face meetings in the business world because the best ideas normally pop up during these in-person meetings. Evaluate the difference between how videoconferencing and in-person meetings usually work.

Fluid discussion is often less frequent when videoconferencing. It’s tough to pin point precisely why. It may be due, partly, to office distractions, and also to any lag that the videoconference has. These issues could be resolved with technological advancements. But in general, when people are videoconferencing they have a tendency to stick to the primary task of the meeting rather then allow conversation to flow naturally, which can lead to creative ideas.

The Benefits of Face-to-Face Time

Conversation evolves considerably more easily with in-person interactions. This is healthy, and as far as business is concerned, can be quite advantageous. Having an impromptu brainstorming session can bring about ideas that can lead the business down a path that wasn’t previously anticipated. This isn’t to say that every face-to-face meeting turns into a game-changing brainstorming session. But if a meeting degenerates into story telling, this is an chance for co-workers to strengthen their interpersonal relationships and improve moral.

Business Travel is Here to Stay

Yes, business travel is a hassle and videoconferencing is convenient. However, there are times when meeting face-to-face is the best option for generating the most imaginative business solutions. Due to this, don’t expect savvy business executives to ever entirely replace business travel with videoconferencing.

Remember watching sci-fi movies as a kid and thinking we would have jetpacks one day? Or teleporters? We don’t have these technologies yet but we do have many amazing technologies that seem straight out of a science fiction movie. Our cars can guide us around a city, via GPS. We can carry tablet computers around with us that hold our data. And we can speak with associates worldwide at the push of a button.

So, why don’t we have teleporters and hovercrafts? What exactly is keeping us from taking these leaps in technology?

Building a Better Battery

First, there is battery power. To put it simply, the batteries running our smartphones and tablets must be recharged too often. A more powerful battery would allow us to run our gadgets for weeks at a time and then charge them again within minutes. This battery does not exist yet. However, it might be coming: researchers at Chicago’s Northwestern University are designing a far more powerful lithium-ion battery. If their prototype becomes commercially viable, it will likely be a game-changer.

Improving Internet Access

The second limiting factor is related to access. Simply put, not enough of the world’s population has access to high-speed Internet access. It may seem like every public library, bookstore, and cafe’ provides its patrons with use of high-speed wireless Internet, but this is largely a mirage. The vast majority of humans don’t have easy access to the web. Until this happens, we’ll be unnecessarily limiting the growth of technology. The more minds that are linked on the Web, the higher the odds are of reaching the next tech breakthrough.

The Business of New Tech

Finally, there’s the business end of things. Technological progress is slowed by arcane matters such as patent law. Businesses take their time introducing new gadgets and services because they must first traverse a minefield of laws and government regulations. These laws are necessary. However, they must be clear and easy to grasp so new technology isn’t bottled up unnecessarily.

While these are a few of the issues that hinder technology from advancing, it still is developing at a rapid pace. So who knows what is waiting for us in the next year or two.

Adobe Photoshop is a fantastic photo manipulation tool. With it, businesses can produce professional looking marketing materials fairly easily. The largest problem with Photoshop is the price. A person looking to buy it can spend more then $600 for newer versions. This is not feasible for many small business owners, and they probably don’t require all of the features that a $600 photo-editing program comes with. Luckily, there are many alternatives to Photoshop that are affordable or free.

These programs may not contain all the components that Photoshop boasts, but they have more than enough photo-editing features for most small business owners. Here are three of the highest quality free photo-editing programs now available:

GIMP

GIMP, which stands for GNU image manipulation program, is the pick of many a cost-conscious designer. That is because this free program contains many of the most important attributes of Photoshop. The GIMP website even offers a version of the program—cleverly named GIMPShop—that features a screen layout that is a virtual twin of Photoshop’s.

Paint.NET

Remember that old MSPaint program that came with your Windows program? Paint.NET is the successor to this, and it is a unexpectedly powerful—and free—photo editor. Paint.NET comes with its own special effects, an unlimited undo (a nice feature for those designers who are far from perfect), and an online forum packed with users who aren’t shy about sharing their favorite tips and strategies for using this program. The only negative of Paint.NET? It only works with Windows-based systems.

Picnik

Picnik is a free program that works well on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. This program has some really fun effects such as blurring, darkening, and lightening images. It’s probably the most popular free editing programs, as you don’t have to download files to use it.

There is no need to purchase the costly Photoshop program to make professional looking pamphlets. For the small business owner on a budget, any of these programs will do the trick while keeping standards high.

The more we rely on mobile devices the more we rely on one little technology. Batteries. Have you ever reached for your smartphone to look something up or to get directions and found that it has died? Well, in a few years, that might be something you don’t need to worry about.

A Better Battery on the Way?

Fortunately, a better battery might soon be on the way, thanks to the efforts of a team of engineers at Chicago’s Northwestern University. A recent story reports that researchers at this Big 10 university are trying to produce a battery that lasts longer and can recharge itself in mere minutes. Smartphone users around the world ought to be thankful.

According to the article, Northwestern’s researchers have found a means to extend the charge-life of a new lithium-ion battery by a factor of 10. Even after 150 charges—which researchers say represents a year or more of operation—this new battery would still be five times more efficient than the today’s lithium-ion batteries.

A Charged Battery for a Week

Here’s the bottom line: The new cell phone battery could stay charged for more than a week and then recharge itself in just 15 minutes. This is excellent news for you: It could mean that your iPod won’t run out of juice while you are working the treadmill at the gym. But the new, better battery might have a much larger impact: Based on the Northwestern story, this new battery technology could result in smaller and more powerful batteries for electric cars. This may help the United States—and other countries—cut its reliance upon fossil fuels.

Batteries Powering Technological Change

The new battery technology isn’t available yet for consumers, but the Northwestern researchers claim that it could hit the market in three to five years. This is a big step. When we look at breakthroughs in technology, we often ignore the batteries that power our latest gadgets. Battery limitations are one of the factors holding back an even greater technology revolution. The hope is that the research done at Northwestern University changes this.

When searching for something on the web, most people automatically go to Google. We even use it as a verb when we “Google” something. However, a lesser-used yet robust search engine is Microsoft’s Bing. While Bing may be often overlooked, it actually has a lot to offer surfers of the Web.

Taking Another Look at Bing

When searching on Bing, you get more information about your search results then you do with Google. Bing has a navigation panel on the left that enables users to focus their search effortlessly. It also organizes search results into logical categories, making it easier to get quick answers.

Bing Goes Beyond Search Results

Bing also brings more than just search results. Say users search for websites about pop star Lady Gaga. Bing will also bring up Lady Gaga’s most recent videos. For users looking for a flight out of town, Bing beats Google easily. The search engine employs something it calls Farecast Technology in its Bing Travel site. This allows users quickly locate the most affordable airfare to specific destinations.

Bing Video Search Shines

Bing stands apart from Google with regards to searching for videos as well. Bing allows users to specify how long they would like videos to be, what resolution they would like, and what screen size they’d prefer. In addition, to get a preview of the video, users only have to hover their cursor over the video to play a portion of it without clicking on it.

These are some reasons why computer users should not disregard Bing. While Google is a household name, it’s not the only search engine out there.

Cloud computing is extremely common these days. The cloud is essentially a group of remote servers where people can store and access their information. People can store music, powerful programs, and essential files in the cloud. As information stored in the cloud isn’t stored on personal computers this saves lots of computer memory. The outcome of this is that people can access more data without having to waste space on their computer, which often can slow it down.

Not All Clouds are the Same

However, that isn’t all you need to understand about the cloud. You have the public cloud, which is the one most of us use, the private cloud, and the hybrid cloud. The hybrid cloud, as the name implies, is a combination of using both the public and private cloud.

To offer a hybrid cloud, a company may store some of their client’s more important or current data in-house and store older, archived, and less crucial files in the public cloud. They can also use the public cloud to store huge software programs and keep confidential data in-house.

The Hybrid Cloud Approach Makes Sense

The hybrid cloud is a good way for organizations to both cut costs and save space. It takes advantage of the less costly public cloud while guaranteeing that highly sensitive data is safeguarded.

Because of this it’s not surprising that the hybrid cloud is so popular. Businesses these days have too much data to store on their own servers but they don’t want the security risk that can come with the public cloud. Utilizing the hybrid cloud they can keep space in their systems free while protecting their data.

Remote working has become more common in the business world today. This is possible as a result of advancements in technology; i.e. smartphones, tablets, and the growing number of public places that have WiFi. There can be many benefits for the employer and the employee. Remote workers are often more productive, and they’re less of a drain on the company resources. For instance, you don’t have to have office space and furniture for remote works. And the benefit of adjusting their schedule to fit their life is a major plus for the employee.

Remote Worker Challenges

One worry that lots of employers have when deciding to hire remote workers is, how can they monitor the volume of work they do? How do they know they are truly working and not just playing games on their computer all day long?

Employers can resolve this dilemma by setting realistic deadlines for their remote employees and expecting these workers to fulfill them. What should matter for employers is that work is done in timely manner. It should not matter if workers finish their tasks from midnight to four in the morning.

Setting Remote Worker Deadlines

Setting deadlines is the easiest method to monitor the work being carried out by remote workers. Supervisors can set short-term and long-term goals or make something due every Friday. Additionally, a manger could have a weekly or biweekly meeting via cellphone or video chat to catch up on the development of projects. This can put the supervisor and employee at ease.

Off-Site Not a Permanent Condition

Employers need to remember, too, that remote workers don’t have to stay that way. If employers see that their off-site employees are not meeting deadlines or are delivering sub-par work, they can require that these workers return to the office on a full-time basis. Trust continues to be the key component of a remote working relationship. Organisations must place some trust in their workers that they will finish their jobs on time. Workers must demonstrate that they are deserving of this trust by hitting their deadlines, turning in quality work, and responding quickly to phone calls or email messages.
